Placencia Losterfest 2017

Placencia Lobster fest 2017

For many decades before Placencia gained fame as a tourism destination its economy revolved around fishing, more specifically lobster fishing. What we are talking about is not those big red ones from Maine but the spiny lobster, also known as rock lobster… Panulirus argus for the scientifically inclined.

And while today visitors may now outnumber lobsters, Placencians remember their roots each year with an annual Lobsterfest. It’s always held within a few weeks of the opening of lobster season on June 15 and this year the annual beach bash is held the weekend of June 23, 24 and 25.

So what happens at Lobsterfest? Duh… Eating of course! From simple food stalls to white tablecloth restaurants there is lobster cooked a dozen ways that you’ve heard of (baked, broiled, boiled, bisqued) and perhaps another dozen you haven’t (pied, pizza-ed, blackened, burgered). Of course no matter how it’s cooked lobster’s best buddy is something cold and wet and there is never a shortage of that.

For those allergic to the crustacean or take greater pleasure in chicken, fish, beef and pork Lobsterfest features plenty of other culinary choices as well as assorted contests, games, exhibitions, art, craft and attractions for children of all ages. Throw in an amazing raffle, marching band, steel band, DJ and dance band and you have a recipe for a great weekend where Belizeans from all over the country join visitors from around the world for some down to earth fun.

And when it’s time to take a break from the action there is no better place to recharge than Naia. Sleep in or watch the sunrise from your private beach house or rejuvenate at Naia’s world class spa. And don’t forget Chef Trinnel’s amazing creations (lobster and otherwise) at the Beach Bar and Grill and 1981.
